Adventure!

Posted by Timo |

left work at 2pm and drove to Vancouver to meet the canadian for a few hours. it was very very nice. great to see him as always. it's too seldom.
Best hugs on the earth, I tell you. I wish ye all could experience it.
went to Milestones for bellini's. oh, and dinner.
we had a great hotel room with the most comfortable bed on Earth.
errr....you can fill in whatever blanks you want.
Deposited him at the airport at 11:30 for his flight back and went back to the amazing hotel bed for 3 hours.
breezed through the Us border. seriously. the soldier just waved me thru. granted, it was almost 4 am when I was returning, but still...
had "shit on a shingle" at a truckstop and then made it home by 6am and went back to bed.

REVIEW : MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981)

Posted by Timo |

Another movie that scared the shit out of me in the early '80's, I revisited it for the first time last night.

1960 - in a small mining town called "Valentine's Bluff", 2 mine supervisors leave their posts to go to a valentine's day party and abandon the 6 miners below. A explosion traps them and 5 of them are killed. the 6th, Harry Warren, survives by eating the dead miners and subsequently goes insane. Understandable. he gets rescued and shortly thereafter murders the 2 supervisors that left them to die. He is shuttled off to cookoo camp and the the town vows to never have a valentine's day dance again.

20 years later, the town decide it's time to have a Valentine's day party.
The mayor receives a box of chocolate containing a human heart and an ominous note warning about what will happen if the Dance goes on. Has Harry Warren come home to Valentine's bluff? They cancel the dance to be sure, but some of the teens decide to have their own party...at the mine where they all work! Very Convenient for a murderous miner, eh?

oooh! Well...

This is a movie that was written entirely from other horror movie scripts. it's basically a re-hash of "halloween". the crazed murderous lunatic escapes and returns nto his hometown to extract his revenge on the silly teens in the town, while the cop, or the doctor or the mayor try to solve the puzzle.

For the most part, it still works, but there is some severe dating going on here. the humour is beyond lame and every single cliche is intact. The killer is dressed from head to toe in a black miner's outfit (and, yes - there are many pick axe murders) which is quite ominous and the film features several good "black christmas"-esque Killer POV shots and the creepy breathing from the mask. Once the action moves down into the mine it gets realllllly creepy. The print of the dvd is excellent and even though the bulk of the Mine scenes are pretty dark, it's easy to see what's going on. Some one is killed with a nail gun, another has her head jammed onto a shower spigot. there's even a shocking twist ending when the identity of the killer is discovered.

my biggest complaint is that a good 9+ minutes of gore was cut from the film to keep it from an X rating and it's painfully obvious on this dvd.
Related to that, Andre told me about a cut he saw with way more gore and a slightly different ending. In my version, the killer is buried but escapes when the cops dig him out after a cave-in - he simply runs away on the other side of the rocks. Andre told me that in the version he saw The killer is caught and handcuffed to another character but gets away during another cave-in by cutting off his own hand! And it's true, Because on my dvd, you see the killer getting away...with part of his arm gone!

Why paramount can't be bothered to restore it is beyond me. This kind of horror movie is pale to the gore ( and overt cruelty ) we get in movies these days like Hostel, Saw, etc..

Well....I have to say that I still enjoyed it 26 years later.

and YES, it's slated for a remake in 2008.

Here's the trailer:

REVIEW : TERROR TRAIN (1980)

Posted by Timo |

this is another early 80's slasher flick that scared the shit out of me way back when!

A Young frat Pledge gets a hideously cruel joke played on him and flips out only to be institutionalized. 3 years later that same group of college kids is having a new years eve party on a chartered train. of course, it's a costume party so identities are hidden and the killer has endless ways to disguise himself as he seeks his revenge on those involved in the prank.

It's all pretty tame by today's standards, but it has some very nice touches. Our favorite horror heroine Jamie Lee Curtis is on board ( ha! ) as is veteran actor Ben Johnson as the calm authority figure. Also on hand is David Copperfield. Yup. I'm not even kidding.

Obviously, this movie is really dated. The hair is downright terrifying, but the premise is quite good. The Lighting and color play an important role here and really add to the creepiness provided by the claustrophobia of the train.
There are quite a few moments where the killer obviously does not have to pay attention to space or time because it's magic, I guess. people are magically killed when no one is around! he moves through locked doors and crawls around on the outside of a speeding train! Decapitations! Severed hands! Some decent gore and a nice final-Final reel. as in the killer is dead dead dead. No sequels.

Jamie Lee Curtis is in fine form here. She really is perfect for these kind of roles. This one has a nice twist and some really great atmosphere. It also has a really odd semi-homo moment between the 2 lead guys when one is dying. it's cute.

I found this when searching to see if anyoe else caught it:
"Then there is the strange discussion between Doc and Mo suggesting a homosexual attraction between them that I missed the first couple of times through . It makes one rethink Doc's motivation for being such an utter asshole -- he is "in the closet", resentful, and treats people like shit to vent his frustration ... Come to think of it, there are a lot of images of closets in this movie. It also explains why he snaps after his buddy Mo is killed, but just sort of shouts a lot after the death of his slutty girlfriend. Then there is the cross dressing female impersonator supporting player who turns out to play a pivotal role ... With Jamie Lee's rather androgynous appearance [Ms. Curtis' costume is a pirate, a very male character, and is wearing her hair like a member of Def Leppard], the male frat boy bonding, and Bochner looking misty eyed at Mo in every other shot, I see a subtle, amusingly subversive homosexual subtext at work that is unprecedented for a film like this of it's time. " Found HERE

the transfer on this one is quite decent. This one also has disco moments, but the disco lights here actually really add to some of the spookiness.

a horror fan would probably own this, but it's def. worth a rental or bargain bin pickup!

REVIEW : PROM NIGHT (1980)

Posted by Timo |

When I saw this movie on HBO in 1981 it scared the living shit out of me.
and now, I watched it last night for the first time in 25 years. Actually, I bought his dvd over a year ago but hadn't gotten around to watching it...based on 1981 scaredy thing.

Story:a little girl named Robin falls to her death from an abandoned schoolhouse window while playing a hide and seek game with 4 other kids. the kids think they are going to go to jail and so make a vow of silence. 6 years later the 4 kids (now teens, obviously) all get obscene phone calls on the day of the school prom. Someone saw what they did! Oooh, Scary!

Jamie Lee Curtis plays the sister of the slain girl and is coincidentally dating the boy that was present at Robin's death. Leslie Neilson plays the principal and also Jamie Lee's Dad. No, I'm not kidding. It's very strange seeing him in such a straight role.

Shortly... ok, over an hour into the flick, the prom begins and the bodies start flying. Ok, there's only like 6 or 7 of them, but you know what I mean. As an added bonus, we are treated to a 5 minute Disco ho-down by Jamie lee and her boyfriend (who looks an awful lot like my ex, Kyle). I have to say I am pleased that there was at least this one Disco themed horror movie. It seems like such an obvious hit, right? except that i think Disco was pretty much Toast by 1980 but I do remember my eldest brother and Sister having the same hair as the teens and dressed just like them, too in the early 80's, and THAT is Scary!

It has a twist ending that comes out of no-where, actually...No, I saw it at minute 4, but You might be surprised.

Jamie lee is excellent here. As she is in every movie I have seen her in. errr...the ones I remember. and I'm telling you, that disco Ho-down is worth the price alone!

after watching this you might feel like this is a familiar story, like maybe you've seen this movie before? You're probably right as that movie is called "i Know What You Did Last Summer" which pretty much borrows the entire premise ( oooh, we accidentally killed someone and let's make a vow of silence and then, a while later, the person that saw it happen is coming after us! ) and also photocopies the scene were the nasty bitch girl gets stalked around the school - it's just like where Sarah Michelle Geller gets stalked around the department store. How original!

Complaints!
My only complaint is that much of the action scenes are way too dark to see what is going on. Oh, and there's like...No Gore. off camera kills...Just some blood. Oh, and a rather decent decapitated head to boot! I'm thinking it was heavily cut to trim down the gore, but this video to dvd transfer is not very good. to dark and the sound is very spotty. I'm hoping for a company like Anchor Bay to release it with extras and a remastered picture.

NOTE: DUH. It's re-released NEXT Tuesday with a nice new cover. No note on any extras, though. I do however like the 6.99 price tag.

Also, I hear they are planning on remaking this one as well. Just can't come up with any new ideas, I guess.

"Just what you would expect but simultaneously exactly what you wouldn't expect. Siouxsie the iconic enigma. The enigmatic icon."

Siouxsie Sioux ( Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Creatures ) releases her first solo album in the US October 2nd. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and am Ready to talk about it.

The first single, "Into A Swan", Leaked onto youtube early Augsut. The video is great, She looks gorgeous but I was a little put off by the voice. Granted she's 50 years old. She smokes and drinks and generally has a good time which means she is beating her vocal chords to death. It took me a while to get used to this newer, deeper and often reaching-for-keys-that-don't-exist-voice. I got the album a few weeks later and was equally shocked.

Produced by Steve Evans ( From Robert Plant's "Strange Sensation" ) and Charlie Jones ( Goldfrapp ) The album sounds like Siouxsie singing Someone else's songs, backed by someone else's band. Several of the songs were immediately enjoyable others gave me the horrors. buyt this is not a bad thing. Most Siouxsie releases have those moments for me. For Instance: Hybrid, Drifter, Falling down, O Baby, Godzilla! and Fruitman come to mind.

I Played it to friends to almost universal approval. A Long time fan and friend remains horrified. Apparently it's better to retire than keep singing when you don't sound just like you did on JuJu. HA!

It all grew on me rather suddenly with 2 small exceptions.
Track by Track:

Into A Swan
- a suprising intro. Fuzzy guitars. Comeback lyrics.
About To Happen - Umm. Sioux does cock rock. Fab.
Here Comes That Day - Sioux as Shirley Bassey. Best song
Loveless - Typical banshees number.
If It Doesn't Kill You - Loungy and fab.
One Mile Below - err. No. auto tune, please.
Drone Zone - Also NO. "buzz..buzzz..buzzing!"
Sea Of Tranquility - Abstract, some great lyrics
They Follow You - Sixties poppy doorsy feel, 2nd fave
Heaven And Alchemy - Another Loungy number. Nice, a tad Vague.

That might sound a little bitchy, but in reality She is my favorite singer and has been since 1986. I'm not sure what I was expecting but this is quite good. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. I look forward to seeing this material live and where she might go in subsequent albums.

saw Rilo Kiley at the showbox saturday with Consuelo, Heidi, Bree & Luigi. They are Consuelo's Favorite band but I had only heard them last week. It was a great show and they are excellent live. My only complaint is that there were 2 bands before them and standing for 3 and a half hour was not so fun.
Thanks Again, Consuelo.

anyway, they are kind of alt-folky pop rock with a touch of country twang.
