Belated Best of 2011

it was a pretty decent year for music. here's a quickie list (with audio/video ) of my favorites of 2011. All in no particular order except the first 1.

1. My absolute fave track of the year comes from Aussie's Garçon Garçon - Stay in touch. it's a Retro Little ditty of love and heartbreak. I'm not exactly sure why but it really resonates with me and I love his voice. I've literally played this a hundred times or more in my car.

Next is the always reliable Sophie Ellis Bextor - Starlight. The official video is awful so I'm posting a video someone made of a live performance set to one of the better remixes. the JRMX mix is best, however.

Ladytron put out a great album called "Gravity the seducer" last summer. It was a mellow and haunting affair and the first single "white elephant" had a really cool kind of 50's lounge music air to it. Here's the video. (Also one of the better concerts I saw in 2011.)

Erasure released an album produced by Frankmusik. It was very fun and modern but still very much erasure sounding. Here's my fave from "tomorrow's world", I lose myself. Saw them at the moore theater last fall. it was a great show and thanks to my friend Mike Burns, we got to meet them and get autographs, etc. it was cool.

Beth Ditto, singer for the Gossip, put out an ep with Simian mobile disco. all 4 songs are excellent. this was the single and video, "I wrote the book". the video is an obvious homage to Madonna's "justify my love".

One of my newer favorites, Hurts, release their awesome debut album in 2010 but released the video for "sunday" in early 2011. Yep, it's silly.

Old Cheezepop faves Aqua returned with a new album called "megalomania"and a somewhat updated sound. This is probably the best song and it has a nifty video. Lene clearly borrowed some leftover shoes from Lady gaga.

I didn't get onto the Deadmau5 bandwagon until very recently. I generally could give a shit about dj's and you know I like songs with WORDS but I follow him on twitter and he's kinda hilarious and I love his pussy, meowingtons. This song is great and best heard very loud with a lot of bass.

"yellow halo" is a nice slow burning atmospheric track from Goldfrapp's forthcoming singles album. I hate the video. It was filmed on an iphone. yippee. the song is lovely, though.

"le7els" by Aviici is a total Robert song that I generally would not be a fan of but the music is great, the vocals are by the legendary Etta James and the video is hysterical. I especially love the look on the asian ladie's face as she dances down the hallway towards the end.

Madonna's theme song to her movie "W.E" is one of the better things she's done in ages. The mid tempo ballad is far more respectable than most of the patehtic top 40 crunk wannabe shit she's cranked out in the last few years. (And if the "demo" I heard of her next single is any indication...barf.)

"take you higher"- Goodwill ft. Hook and Sling is another Robert discovery. Great music, unusual vocals, and a gorgeous video. it's probably just that hotter than shit guy, though.

I'm sure there's more but I can't recall off the top of my head. Oh, and allow me to mention that people like Lady Gaga and Adele did some great stuff in 2011, but I am so fucking sick of those two I doubt I ever want to hear them anytime soon. Especially Adele, great album? yes! Overplayed? Insanely. Short shelf life. perfect Suicide album. Just can't be that depressed all the time.

I just realized that I still have readers here ( shock? who knew?) that may not see my facebook or tweets. I put my best bud of the last 15+ years to sleep about 3 weeks ago. She had multiple health issues this year but always pulled through - but she had been going down hill the last few months. In retrospect, I was either blind or lying to myself that she was fine and it finally took my vet to point blank tell me that I was no longer doing her any favours by keeping her alive and she was suffering and merely putting on a show for me at that point.

Cheesy as it may sound, it was an awful decision for me to make and the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I spent a couple days of quality time with her and made sure her last day was a happy one for her. two of my best friends were with me when I took her to the vet ( wed, the 30th, 5:30 pm ) and the event itself was shockingly calm and peaceful. We buried her in my best friend's back yard with some of her favorite toys. I'm having a hard time being in my apartment without her and I keep hearing little phantom TanQ noises.

Here's to the cat I never wanted but quickly grew to love more than anything.
She is sorely missed.

Allow me to say this: the artists that I love, I expect a lot from. I do not tolerate my idols dropping random shit and calling is flawless.
with that said, Kylie's "comeback" single, "All The Lovers" is one of my favorite songs in years and easily one of her best. The music is completely incredible. I especially love the little crazy techno bee noise at 2:29 and the hot guys kissing at 2:51 in the video. LOVE it.

"Get Outta My Way" became a summer staple and theme song while stuck in idiot seattle traffic. This is my favorite mix along with a tasty extended video.

Robyn - body talk - part 1, 2 & 3
"Dancing on my own" was honestly a surprise. it was everything I loved about Robyn's previous venture but without the lame hip hop baggage that dragged a lot of it down. Here's an awesome live version from Letterman.

"Hang with me" - her second tremendous single with a really fun video. She is a fucking BLAST live, I must add. Like a spastic aerobics instructor.

"Indestructible" is probably my favorite songs from all the "body talk" albums, the video is not so fun, however. so, here's a really fun remix video by A-trak.

"Better than love" this is another driving to work favorite. give it until 1:20 and then turn it way up.

goldfrapp - head first.
I wasn't sure what to think of this album. Goldfrapp are faves but the lame hippy folk bullshit of their last album put a very bad taste in my mouth so I wasn't expecting much. "Head first" had a very 80's radio feel that went stale really fast. "rocket" and "dreaming" are amoung their best, though. There were some really awesome mixes, too, by the likes of Dave Aude and the legendary Vince Clark - who gave it a proper ultra bouncy Erasure feel. The video for "alive" is a scream so I'm including it here.

4 years in the making? it feels like a huge misstep to me. early 80's didn't really work for Goldfrapp, did it? a handful of great songs and a lot of filler. try again. I still love them , though. and remixes help. and I will say they all look delicious.

"Any which way" 7th heaven remix edit

andy bell - non-stop. Again, I expect more from the people I love. Like his other solo album, there's a couple of really great tracks, including a fun duet with Perry Ferrel and one of his career best, the title track. To me, the rest is very much filler and why bother. Get your ass back to vince's studio, Andy. And yes, I would be equally harsh on neil Tennant, Mike.

"call on me" - here's the delightfully twisted Vince Clark mix.

Mgmt - Congratulations. a few really cool songs, the rest is pretty much a very low key departure. Possibly a bit too mellow, but I didn't hate it like my friend Tommy.
"it's working" - holy shit! Guitars!

"Congratulations" So, I love this song even though I just realized that it kinda reminds me of the grateful dead which is NEVER a good thing.

this isn't definitive. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few decent albums.

...the largest rodent in the world, in fact! The Capybara is a semi-aquatic Giant Rodent found in South America. They are huge and totally cute. I saw pictures of these clever folks using them as pets (instead of eating them!) and I decided that I must have one. Mostly vegetarian, it could hang out with TanQ all day and not eat her.

clearly I know nothing about them but I like the idea of a giant cute rodent as a pet and not the subject of a horror movie. "Night of the Capybaras!"

not a great deal to say lately.

not all that excited about the holidays this year but excited to get the fuck out of dodge for a week ( leave for mpls on the 17th back the 26th ). have not spent much more than 3 whole days away from work all year. pretty much ready to scream and/or stab someone in the eye.

otherwise, things are freakin' peachy.
